Waldo Canyon Fire 70% Contained

According to the Information Incident System, on June 23, the Waldo Canyon fire started approximately three miles west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This is the most destructive fire Colorado has ever seen.

The Waldo Canyon fire is roughly 17,920 acres and has destroyed 346 homes. As of today, the fire is estimated to be 70% contained.   According to News Denver, there are close to 1,500 firefighters grappling with the destructive flames. The fire has also resulted in the death of two people.

Because attention is focused on curbing the fire, crime has been prevalent; there have been a reported 22 burglaries in the evacuated areas.

On June 29, President Obama visited Colorado Springs to see the devastation in the burned neighborhoods. He also thanked the firefighters that were fighting the blaze, and visited a Red Cross evacuation center.

Firefighters hoped to have the fire completely contained by July 16.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is estimated that there is about $8.8 million in damages.
