Two sheriff’s deputies were shot resulting in one fatality and one being critically injured on Friday after being confronted by a man at his home in Fairhope, Alabama.
CNN reports that Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office was called to the house to help settle a family dispute.
The dispute was at the 11800 block of Mallard Lane. Relatives said Michael Jansen had become aggressive towards them, according to Local 15 TV.
As deputies went over to talk to Jansen he pulled out his handgun and started shooting at the deputies.
He fatally shot Deputy Scott Ward, 47, and injured another deputy who had not been identified. Both men were flown to the USA Medical Center where the injured deputy was receiving surgery. Ward died at the hospital.
Sheriff Huey Mack said, “We’re the largest law enforcement agency in Baldwin County, but still small enough that everybody is very close. I have personally worked with [Ward] the majority of my career, I knew him very well; I’m very proud of him, it’s a big loss.”
People who know Ward said he was a good family man and cared about the community he worked for.
Major Anthony Lowery said, “These guys have a job to do, we’re going to do our job; this is an extremely tough situation we’re going through, but we’re going to work through it and ask you to pray for our deputies at this time.”
Jansen was also pronounced dead at the scene.
