A mother left her two children sitting on the side of Interstate 90 after running out of gas.

According to the AP, the boys, ages three and six, told Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office their mother walked them over to the spot they were found even though it was dark out and raining.

The mother, 27-year-old Shannon Germantown, then got a ride between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Mountain time to go to the gas station. At about 9:10 a.m. a construction worker had found the children

NBC News reports that the mother was arrested at a house in Spokane Valley, Washington after a tip was received. The two counties sit side-by-side on the state line. She was arrested on a local negligent driving warrant. The Kootenai County sheriff’s office plans to take the case to the local magistrate to seek an arrest warrant that would allow Spokane County to hold Germanton pending extradition to Idaho.

According to the sheriff’s office statement, “she had been in an argument with her boyfriend and just needed to get to a phone to call for a ride.”

The woman had been at Wal-Mart near the state line on Monday and somebody had called the police saying she was acting strangely.

The children were cleared by emergency medical providers and are in foster care.
