Jared Loughner was sentenced to seven life terms and 140 additional years.
Loughner agreed to a plea deal in August. He plead to 19 counts which include attempted assassination of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and six life sentences for the six fatalities, according to Tucson News.
The deal was to not give Loughner the death penalty but to make sure he spent the rest of his life in prison.
Federal Judge Larry Burns said that, at the time of the shooting, Loughner knew what he was doing and was not insane.
Gabe Zimmerman, 30, John Roll, 63, Phyllis Schneck, 79, Dorothy Morris, 76, Dorwan Stoddard, 76, and Christina Taylor Green, 9, were all killed in the January 2011 incident.
CNN reports that nine victims and Giffords and her husband spoke at the sentencing.
“Mr. Loughner, you may have put a bullet through her head, but you haven’t put a dent in her spirit and her commitment to make the world a better place,” Giffords’s husband Mark Kelly said.
Susan Hileman was wounded by the shooting and said, “You pointed a weapon at me and shot me. Over last several months, I wanted to take you by the shoulders and shake you and scream at you. It’s an awful situation, it’s all because of you.”
