A gunman wearing a painter’s mask set fire to a home and then went on a shooting spree Saturday.
According to USA Today, the gunman killed a father and his 4-year-old son. A woman and two other kids were injured in Inglewood.
Mark Fronterotta, Inglewood Police Chief, said the father was shielding two of his children when he was shot. The woman, who is said to be the mother of the children, carried the 4-year-old over to a neighbor after the attack.
“This extraordinary rescue attempt by the mother occurred in spite of the fact that she had gunshot wounds to both legs,” according to a police department statement.
According to NBC, the suspect was in the process of being evicted from his home. Judy Castellanos has a daughter related to one of this victims and said the suspect had not paid his rent and police had been called before for several disturbances.
He lived in a unit in the back of the duplex from where the family lived.
The suspect is described as an African American, about 5-foot-6, and approximately 55 years old and was wearing a dark baseball mask, according to police.
“The fire had been started before the shooting, and then the suspect came into the house with a painter’s mask on,” said Fronterotta. “The father was in a position of shielding the children as officers came into the scene.”
The 28-year-old mother is in critical but stable condition. The two other children are in critical but stable condition. There was an 8-year-old who was uninjured.
