Graham Spanier, former Penn State University president, was arraigned on Wednesday for his possible involvement in the sexual abuse case.
CNN reports Spanier had allegedly helped cover up the fact that Jerry Sandusky had been sexually abusing boys on campus.
Spanier had been president of the university for 16 years before he was fired in November 2011. Last week, he was charged with obstruction of justice, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children, failure to report a crime, and perjury.
The Associated Press reports that Spanier signed paperwork after his bail was set at $125,000, which he did not have to post unless he does not show up for future court dates. He had to forfeit his passport and be fingerprinted.
Prosecutors are claiming that Spanier conspired with Tim Curley, athletic director, and Gary Schultz, vice president, to cover up the sexual abuse.
Additional charges have been added against Curley and Schultz. They were arraigned on Thursday.
Spanier’s defense attorney, Elizabeth Ainslie, said her client is “not guilty, absolutely,” and disputed all the claims being brought against him. She said Spanier had not been given the opportunity to give his side of the story.
“This wasn’t a conspiracy of silence,” she said, echoing the charge made last week by state Attorney General Linda Kelly. “That is ridiculous.”
Spanier claims he is being framed for political purposes.
