An 18-year-old Oldsmar, Florida boy is being accused of shooting and killing his mother, Imari Shibata, and her boyfriend, Kelly Allen, early Sunday.
According to Fox 12, Benjamin Bishop, was angry that his mother told him to take his medicines for his mental health issues. Shibata had also told her son he needed to get a job and help pay the rent. Bishop apparently was also angry with Allen, who apparently he never got along with.
According to detectives, Bishop was on probation for domestic battery after attempting to strangle and hit his mother last year.
“I wouldn’t have expected this, I don’t think anyone would’ve but I knew he [Bishop] was having problems,” said Roger Clarke, a neighbor of the family. “Recently there have been EMTs and paramedics over there quite a bit and cops have been over there.”
NBC reports that a friend of Bishops bought the shotgun for him a few weeks ago at a shop for $279. He said he needed the gun to protect him from gang members. Bishop had pawned electronic items to get the money to buy it.
Bishop had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He is being held in the Pinellas County Jail without bond.
A sheriff’s press release read:
Bishop advised detectives that on Saturday, October 27th, his mother told him to get a job, take his medicine for his mental health issues, and to start paying rent. Bishop said he also had a discussion with Allen over the laundry. Saturday night, Bishop said he was angry and retrieved the shotgun after the arguments, loaded the weapon and shot his mother and Allen in their bedroom. He told detectives he then reloaded the shotgun and shot them again.
