An explosion in Indianapolis has left two dead and 27 homes uninhabitable.

The explosion happened on Saturday just after 11 p.m., according to WTHR.

Two were pronounced dead and it was unsure if they were both in the same house or if there was one in each of two houses that exploded. Four other victims were transferred to Wishard Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard said it was not a plane crash, as reports were speculating on this. Fire officials were checking to see if natural gas was the cause of the explosion, according to NBC News.

Marion County Sheriff John Layton said, “Multiple houses engulfed in flames. Even the police officers that got to the scene before I did were not sure what happened. Kind of a surreal scene, even for police officers.”

The entire neighborhood was evacuated and power was turned off in the subdivision. Other nearby neighborhoods were evacuated also. There was a shelter set up at Mary Bryan Elementary School.

Julie Hamm, a neighborhood resident, said, “It was just the loudest thing I ever heard, inside my house.”

Another homeowner said his house shook and did like a teeter totter on the foundation.
