Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper told people celebrating not to “break out the Cheetos or gold fish too quickly.” His administration is still trying to figure out how residents can buy and sell marijuana without breaking federal laws, according to Time.
Colorado and Washington are trying to legalize marijuana and add a sales tax to it when purchasing, on top of the lesser penalties for criminal charges.
The law in Washington would need a license for growing and selling. The license is to be handled by the states liquor control board. There will be no sale of it to people under 21 and there will be a 25 percent tax to be used to fund drug prevention, schools, and health insurance.
The law in Colorado allows possession and growing for use or to give away. To sell it will require a license from the department of revenue and will be taxed up to 15% to fund school construction.
CNN reports the Drug Enforcement Administration issued a statement soon after the results we in stating “enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act remains unchanged.”
“In enacting the Controlled Substances Act, Congress determined that marijuana is a Schedule I controlled substance. The Department of Justice is reviewing the ballot initiatives, and we have no additional comment at this time.”
Legalizing marijuana would save about $10 billion spent every year trying to enforce marijuana prohibition.
It could be as soon as two months when the legalization of marijuana in Colorado could happen.
Hickenlooper said, “The voters have spoken and we have to respect their will.”
