Australia's Western Coast has seen it's fifth shark attack

The hunt for a great white shark that attacked an Australian man is on.

Beaches in Perth, which is in Western Australia, have been closed, according to Bloomberg. The surfer, who was out off of Wedge Island, was taken off of his board by what was presumed to be a great white.

The eaters along Western Australia’s southern coast have been a hot spot for shark attacks lately, reports CNN.

“Certainly for Australia, and Western Australia in particular, I would say that five deaths from shark attacks in less than 12 months is very unusual,” said Tony Cappelluti, a spokesman for the Shark Response Unit.

“We’ve had officers patrolling the beach since first light today and there’s been no further sightings of the shark,” Cappelluti said. Beaches in the area will remain closed until tomorrow morning, he said.

Recently, Nathan Podmore and his friend were spear fishing on the western coast of Australia and came in contact with a 12-foot-long shark.

“It wasn’t in attack mode. It was more curious,” he told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield. He said he and his friend fended it off before getting back to their boat.

“I always said that I would like to see one. … No, but, I never want to see another one in the water. It’s nuts,” Podmore said.
