A United States Secret Service agent was found dead of an apparent suicide.

Rafael Prieto was under investigation for having an unreported romantic relationship with a foreign national, according to Reuters.

“Rafael Prieto has a distinguished 20-year career with the Secret Service that was marked by accomplishment, dedication, friendships and the Secret Service is mourning a valued colleague,” said Max Milien, a spokesman for the Secret Service.

Prieto was not in trouble for compromising sensitive or classified information. The Secret Service was trying to see if he was violating any rules by having that relationship.

CNN reports Prieto’s access to Secret Service facilities had been suspended while authorities looked into his unreported long term relationship.

“There is nothing to indicate that any classified or sensitive information was compromised as a result of this relationship,” according a source.

A spokeswoman for the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, Gwendolyn Crump, would not comment on any details that concerned the ongoing investigation.

Prieto was assigned to President Obama’s protective detail.

The Secret Service has been under public watch for the past few months after Secret Service agents brought prostitutes back to their hotel rooms in Colombia back in April.

Another Secret Service member had been found passed out on a street corner in Miami last month.
