A 13-year-old girl who was shot on a school bus earlier in the day has died.
Huffington Post states that the girl was airlifted to the Miami Children’s Hospital but did not survive.
A male student on the bus has been taken into police custody and is being questioned. It is said the girl was shot in her neck. There were also about eight other students on the bus at the time of the shooting.
Some parents had arrived on scene to take their kids home but Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said they were transferring the students to the homicide bureau to be questioned.
The girl was heading to the Palm Glades Preparatory Academy and her 7-year-old sister that was also on the bus was headed to Summerville Advantage Academy. The bus also takes students to Somerset Silver Palms K-12 school.
NBC News reports the incident happened at Southwest 296th Street and Southwest 137thAvenue in Homestead.
Zabaleta said, “They were able to immediately determine that the shooting occurred inside the bus, and that the alleged shooter was also inside the bus. He was immediately taken into custody. He was detained, placed in a police car. We were able to recover the firearm.”
He also said, “No other children were injured. They have been transported to the homicide bureau for questioning.”
Police are unsure of a motive.
